How to find the cheapest flights

Well, first of all, finding cheap flights always is a gamble. Often no one can understand how prices rise and fall. But with our tips, you should have a good chance of snagging a good bargain or two.

1. Always search on several websites

Flight comparison sites make your life easier by querying different airlines and connections. We recommend using not only one of them. Most of the time we use Skyscanner, Momondo, or Google Flights. The operators are a little different in what options you can search for but will tell you almost the same price. Just use the one you like best. They all refer you to online travel agencies. We used a ton of different ones over the years.

After you found your perfect connection, be sure to always check out the site of the airline too. If they offer the same price, be sure to book directly with them. In case of any complications, you will be better off that way.
Also, check sites like Urlaubsguru/-pirates from time to time. They collect all vacation deals out there for you. Here we got lucky already. The most famous deals on such sites are so-called error fares, those are price errors. Here, an error occurred while entering the prices and if you are quick, you can get a flight for 111€ instead of 1,111€. These errors have become less and the airline will cancel the flight if you are unlucky. But it is still worth a try!

2. Always pay attention to what is included in the flights price

If you think the price is too good to be true, it probably is (except for the above-mentioned error fares). With such low-fare flights, you will be charged extra for everything. Especially the checked baggage can end up being more expensive than your actual flight. So check first what is included in the price!

3. Always be flexible

What do we mean by that? The flight dates and the airport.
First to the flight dates: as already mentioned, the flight prices often vary a lot. This is due to the days of the week or vacation periods. We noticed that flights in the middle of the week (Tue-Thu) are usually cheaper. This makes sense since most people tend to have the weekends off and have time to travel.
The time of day can also affect the price. Flights late at night or early in the morning are cheaper. That is because most people like to travel with comfort and relaxation and don’t want to set an alarm in the middle of the night. Another bonus with overnight flights is, you also save a night in a hotel!

You can also save money while booking flights by trying out different departure and destination airports. Check out if it’s cheaper to book a train or a short flight either from your home country or to your destination. Sometimes even to a neighboring country. E.g. you are coming from the north of Germany, Amsterdam could be an option.

Long story short: The more flexible you are, the cheaper it will be.

4. Always search in incognito mode

This way your browser does not save what you are searching for. Sometimes it can also be helpful to clear the cache and delete the cookies. Another option would be to search with a VPN. Don’t know what that is? Check out our blog post here.

5. Always plan ahead

Unfortunately, there is an early booking discount for flights. Even if you can spontaneously get good last-minute deals on accommodation, you should book flights as soon as you know when and where you are going to! It’s not like it was cheaper a year before. Usually, 4 to 6 months (sometimes even shorter) is the cheapest. This tip rather refers to a fixed destination.
Are you planning a trip?!

Then these platforms might help you. We use them for all our travels and if you use them too by clicking the link we earn a small fee. However, you don’t pay extra, but we can keep this site running. So win-win!
