California

in a nutshell

You would probably think about hollywood, cowboys & Indians, fast food and American football in first place. But it’s more than that. The land of the unlimited possibilities, the American dream from a dishwasher to a millionaire is omnipresent and so is the Amercian way of life which stands for equal rights and equality of opportunity. The US stand for freedom and patriotism. 43% of the Americans are evangelic-protestants, 26% are without denomination and 20% are catholic.

You don’t need any special vaccionations to travel to the US. A vaccination against hepatits A is recommended. If you stay longer a vaccination against hepatitis B, rabies and meningococci may be to consider.

You need to apply for an ESTA-visum at least 2-3 days prior to your departure. The permit has to be shown at the check-in counter of your airline. If you don’t have it, you won’t be able to board the plane. You can stay up to 90 days after your immigration and it costs 21$. It allows you to travel as often as you want to the US wihin 2 years, but be sure to stay maximum 90 days each stay.

The US in general are a safe country. There are some pickpockets in the metropolitan areas , in partricular at crowded places, e.g. on subways, at train stations or airports or in bad neighborhoods. Also, there are some car-break-ins, so don’t leave any valuables inside the car, especially don’t leave them visible in the car. Don’t sleep at the highway’s rest areas as there have been camper burglaries.

The US are a more expensive travel country. Prices in general are 8% higher than in Germany. Espcially hotels in the bigger cities and restaurants are pretty expensive (and right now rental cars as well). Fuel and some groceries like candy or softdrinks are cheap, while meat, cheese and vegetables are expensive. You wanna know what we spent in the USAclick here
