The 7 Best Hostels we ever stayed in

Hostels often have a bad reputation. As a couple, we normally don’t stay a lot in hostels or dorm rooms as a double room in a „normal“ hotel often costs as much as 2 bunk beds. Nevertheless, there are hostels that are more than just uncomfortable dorms and which made it on our 7 hostel recommendations. Some offer a feeling of community, cool activities, or just a good party crowd. Check out the 7 best hostels we stayed in!

How to find the best Hostels

We always compare the rates on different booking platforms, such as booking.com, Hostelworld, or Agoda. One of the best travel tips we can give you is to compare prices on the different platforms (although we book on booking.com as they often are the cheapest!). The links on this page are affiliated links. This means we earn a small commission which helps us to run this page. So in case you want to support us: we would be very happy if you use the links to book your stay as it won’t be more expensive for you!

To save you some time we collected the best hostels we ever stayed at all around the world. When it comes to this list, we selected these 7 best hostels because of their uniqueness and our excellent experiences.

Arequipa as a city surprised us. We didn’t really know what to expect but it’s so worth visiting on your way from Lima to Cusco or the other way around. One of the best hostel recommendations is the Selina Arequipa

When we were there, the prices were cheap and the Selina is located only 10 minutes by foot north of the main square in Arequipa. As it is part of the Selina group it is very stylish. It offers a huge garden including a swimming pool, a pool bar, a tree house and private rooms. They also do yoga and other activities. You will find some cool people hanging around there for sure.

This wonderful hostel is located right next to one of Colombia’s most famous national parks, the Tayrona National Park. Costeño Beach offers a stunning lagoon pool, a beachfront location, and delicious, affordable food.

We had a small hut in the lush green garden and loved our stay. There are events every night, so you can meet some fellow backpackers. Also, you can take a scooter taxi from here to the national park, go tubing on the neighboring river, or simply chill at the awesome pool. It was the first on our list of the best hostels as we still think back and love everything about it!

You can only book this one through Hostelworld and they book out quite fast, so secure your spot!

Most people only go to Cancun, Tulum or Holbox when visiting the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. Don’t miss the beautiful lagoon of Bacalar. It is supposed to have 7 shades of blue and we can confirm that: the lagoon is stunning! Bacalar was, aside Puerto Escondido, our favorite place in Mexico, so be sure to stop here!

A good option for backpackers is the Che Bacalar. It’s not far from the lagoon, has a nice pool to cool down and offers community events like going to Los Rapidos. It is more like a party hostel (shutting down at around 11pm) but we definitely enjoyed our stay there. It opened in October 2021 and is pretty new.

Frendz Hostel El Nido

El Nido is famous for being the starting point for all your island-hopping tours in Palawan. Frendz El Nido is THE place to stay while visiting this beautiful area, so it had to be on the list of our best hostels. It is a more upscale hostel but the dorms are clean, with AC and the beds have curtains. Some even have ensuite bathrooms.

We loved the rooftop pool where you can enjoy a stunning view over the bay including the daily sunset. They also offer island hopping tours themselves and we went with them twice. One boat is always the hostel boat, so you will be on tour with all your roommates and it’s gonna be a fun day for sure! It definitely deserves its spot on our best hostels list!

One of our favorite natural sights in the entire world is located right next to Foz do Iguaçu, the Iguaçu Falls. They are right on the border between Brazil and Argentina. If you want to read more about that, be sure to check out our blog post about the Iguaçu Falls

The Selina Hostel in Foz would be one of our hostel recommendations for you. It has lovely rooms, a huge garden including a big pool, a coworking area, and free events like a cocktail class. Also, there is a bus stop in front of the door which brings you to the famous waterfalls, so we had to include it in our list of the best hostels.

Siem Reap is the gate to the world-famous Angkor Wat temples. You definitely have to visit them once in your life. Lub d Siem Reap is located only a 5-minute walk from the famous pub street (the Cambodian version of Khao San Road in Bangkok). It is rather a party hostel but they have many free activities like a sunset tour, a walking tour or a cinema night as well.

We had a double room and it was clean and modern. A pool is also important as it can get extremely hot in Siem Reap. Be sure to try the fortune wheel to get some free snacks, drinks, or even free nights!

Have you ever dreamed about a volcano view while lying in your bed? Then, you have to book Secret Garden Cotopaxi. It’s located 3 hours away from Quito and they offer a free shuttle from the Secret Garden Hostel in Quito to the one at Cotopaxi National Park. They also offer tours to climb the Cotopaxi volcano or a free hike to a close by waterfall.

The picture may seem photoshopped but it’s not. You have to be lucky to get a clear view because there are many clouds around the volcano. There’s nothing around the hostel, so you will have to eat there, but the food is delicious. The rooms are very basic with shared bathrooms but the fascinating view makes it worth it. You can also book private spots for a jacuzzi to warm yourself as it can get cold!
