1. Basic Information about an Algarve Roadtrip

The Algarve is a region in the Southern part of Portugal which is known for its beautiful beaches and sunny weather. It is one of the warmest parts of Europe all year round, but the ideal time for this road trip is during late spring or early autumn when the weather is pleasant, and tourist crowds are thinner.

Good to know: Portugal has toll roads. It’s possible to rent an electronic toll device for convenience but not necessary. While wild camping is restricted (especially in the peak season in summer), campsites offer a unique and affordable coastal stay.

We started our journey in Lisbon but it’s also possible to fly into Faro, which is located in the South and the capital of the Algarve region. It’s a shorter drive if you start in Faro. But if you don’t mind the longer drive we recommend starting in Lisbon as you’ll have a bigger selection when renting your campervan. Also, Lisbon is beautiful and has a lot of nice sights around like our first stop Sintra.

2. Lisbon

Start your Algarve roadtrip in Portugal’s capital city. Lisbon has so much to offer, that you can spend a long weekend here without boredom. Wander through the narrow streets of the Alfama district filled with colorful houses, hear the soulful melodies of Fado music, and absorb the rich cultural tapestry that defines Portugal’s capital. Or jump onto the famous yellow, old tram from the 1930s, party at the Bairro Alto, or enjoy Lisbon’s beauty from one of the viewpoints or rooftop bars. We already visited it twice. Once at the start of our road trip and once for a city trip. A Lisbon article is coming soon!

3. Daytrip to Sintra (30km / 35min)

While staying in Lisbon, take a day trip to Sintra which is just a short drive away. Sintra is renowned for its beautiful palaces, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and stunning natural landscapes. The area is bigger than you might think and you can easily spend 2 days here if you want to go to all of the sights. We visited the famous Quinta (and Torre) da Regaleira. The admission is 12€/14$ and the queues can be long in high season.

Close to the Quinta de Regaleira you can find the Palácio Nacional de Sintra which will cost you 13€/15$. Unfortunately, we missed the colorful (and probably most famous sight) Palácio Nacional da Pena. The admission is 20€ or 22$. The palace, perched atop a hill, offers breathtaking views of Sintra’s lush landscapes.

You can simply wander through Sintra’s Old Town, characterized by charming cobblestone streets and pastel-colored buildings, and visit local shops and cafes, immersing yourself in the town’s fairytale atmosphere. If you go there by car or camper van, be sure to park outside the city as the streets can be narrow and parking is limited. Also, there is a free public shuttle bus which will take you to the main sights.

4. Sagres (330km / 3h 15min)

Prepare for the longest drive during your 10-day Portugal road trip of 330 km from Sintra to Sagres. Tip: from Lisbon’s city center, drive South over the famous Ponte 25 de Abril which looks like the Golden Gate Bridge with a nice look at the Santuário de Cristo Rei, the famous Christ statue. We didn’t visit the last one, but of course, you can do that if you have the time.

A worthwhile stop on your way to the South is Aljezur with its rugged coastline. Check out Praia de Monte Clérigo which offers a surfer’s haven, offering consistent waves and stunning scenery. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a novice, the thrill of riding the Atlantic waves is an unforgettable experience. Aljezur’s castle ruins provide a panoramic view of the surrounding landscapes. Explore the historic remnants, and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the town, coastline, and the Monchique mountains in the distance.

Sagres, located at the southwestern tip of Portugal, is home to Cape St. Vincent. Stand on the cliffs and witness the meeting of the land and sea, a dramatic spectacle that has captivated travelers for centuries. The lighthouse adds a touch of maritime history to this scenic spot. Explore Sagres Fortress, a historic stronghold with a maritime museum, and dive into Portugal’s seafaring history and the Age of Discoveries, gaining insights into the nation’s exploration legacy. For a quick snack, go to „Letzte Bratwurst vor Amerika“ a German bratwurst hut, where you can get the last Bratwurst before America.

5. Lagos (35km / 35min)

The next stop is one of the highlights of your Algarve road trip! Lagos‘ Old Town is a picturesque maze of cobbled streets, adorned with historic architecture. We loved the vibrant atmosphere as we explored charming squares, local shops, and traditional Portuguese cafes. The unique blend of history and contemporary culture makes every corner a delight.

Ponta da Piedade is a natural masterpiece, featuring golden cliffs and crystal-clear waters. We went there for sunrise and loved it. It’s also possible to take a boat tour to witness the breathtaking sea caves and grottoes. For the adventurous, climb down the wooden steps for an up-close encounter with this stunning coastal landscape.

Only a few minutes away is the another beach you can not miss, the stunning Praia do Camilo. We had the two spots nearly for ourselves, so definitely go there early! After, check out Praia de Dona Ana as well. It can get very crowded in the afternoon but it was nice to have a dip in the cold water (17 degrees Celsius in August).

6. Portimao (30km / 35min)

Portimão, situated along the Arade River, offers delightful riverside walks. Explore the charming promenades, lined with cafes and shops. Indulge in seafood gastronomy at waterfront restaurants, savoring the freshest catches. For shopping, we also liked the Aqua Portimão Shopping Centre where you can find all of the famous stores. It’s also a good location to stay for a couple of days and explore some of the highlights of the Algarve within a few minutes of driving.

Definitely, spend a day at the beach at the beautiful Praia da Marinha which is only 25min (17km) away from Portimao. This iconic beach, with its natural arches and caves, is a haven for beach lovers.

Close to that is also the famous Benagil Cave. The cave is characterized by a large dome-shaped opening in the ceiling, allowing sunlight to filter through and illuminate the interior. Visitors can access the Benagil Cave by boat, kayak, or paddleboard only, with boat tours being the most popular option. These tours depart from nearby coastal towns such as Benagil, Carvoeiro, or Portimão. Keep in mind that the cave can get crowded during peak tourist seasons as it is one of Algarve’s most famous sights and very instagrammable.

Another nice beach is Praia dos Três Irmãos where you can walk between huge cliffs and explore hidden coves.

7. Albufeira (35km / 35min)

As the sun sets, Albufeira comes alive with a vibrant nightlife. The strip, lined with bars and clubs, offers a bustling atmosphere for those seeking entertainment after a day of sun-soaked adventures. It’s the perfect way to unwind and party with fellow travelers. We didn’t like it that much in Albufeira as it was way too touristy and we think that there are more authentic beach towns in the Algarve region.

8. Other stops you may include in the Algarve region

Tavira, with its historic charm, is a town meant for leisurely exploration. Wander along the Gilão River, cross the Roman Bridge, and discover the tranquil beauty of Tavira’s old town. The scenic views and peaceful ambiance make it a perfect escape. Tavira’s markets are a food lover’s paradise. Indulge in local delicacies, fresh seafood, and artisanal products. It’s a gastronomic journey that adds a flavorful touch to your Algarve experience.

Faro, the capital of the Algarve, boasts a captivating Old Town. Stroll through the ancient city walls, visit the cathedral, and lose yourself in the narrow streets filled with architectural wonders. Faro’s Old Town is a cultural treasure trove. Ria Formosa Natural Park, just outside Faro, is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Explore its diverse ecosystems, home to numerous bird species.

Silves, with its Moorish heritage, boasts a well-preserved castle. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the city and the surrounding countryside. The castle’s historical significance adds a layer of fascination to your Algarve journey. Surrounding Silves, you’ll find citrus groves and orchards. Take a moment to relax amidst the fragrant citrus trees, absorbing the tranquility of the countryside.

Loulé’s Gypsy Market is a vibrant spectacle of colors, aromas, and local crafts. Dive into the lively atmosphere as you peruse stalls selling everything from fresh produce to handmade souvenirs. It’s a cultural immersion that showcases the heart of Loulé. Loulé Castle, with its medieval charm, offers a glimpse into the region’s past. Wander through the historic walls and enjoy panoramic views of the town below.

9. Conclusion

We absolutely love Portugal, Lisbon and the Algarve! From the bustling streets of Lisbon to the fairytale allure of Sintra and our favorite town Lagos, the Algarve offers everything for unforgettable moments. For us, taking a camper van is the perfect way to explore all of the small coastal towns and to save money for expensive hotel rooms!

You will wanna use every second on the beach or walking through those lovely alleys and you have more freedom with your own home on weels. Even if we weren’t brave enough to try wild camping here, because the fees can be very high, we had beautiful camping spots and can highly recommend it. One last tip if you decide to do it as well: Mikki’s Place to Stay. was our favorite camp site. Don’t miss it on your Algave road trip!
